“Guess that estimate” contest!

I have been playing “guess that estimate”, and this morning when I woke up I had an idea of extreme brilliance… a contest!

I am grateful that nobody got hurt, and though this is all rather an inconvenience, it is not a tragedy.

And I thought other people might like to get in on guessing what the damages will be.

First Prize is a $25 gift certificate to Spunky Eclectic

Second Prize is three skeins of superwash wool

runnerupprize
This is “Irrestringible Carezza” from Lane Cervinia, navy, worsted, 100% superwash wool, 100 grams, ~180 meters. I’ve kept it in a cedar lined box. It feels springy for superwash and is less itchy than Cascade 220.

Contest Details

Guess what the repair estimate will be on the car. Send me your guess in a comment to this post. The person who guesses closest to the actual estimate will get the gift certificate. If two people guess equally close, but one is under and one is over, I’ll choose the one that is over. After all, if you had to pay for a repair and were expecting to pay, say $1000, and the bill came in at $800, you’d feel good, versus if the bill came in at $1200.

Second prize will go to a random winner. I’ll contact the winner, and if you’d rather not have the navy yarn, I’ll go to the next random number.

Edited to Add: Contest deadline 5 pm Eastern time (standard? daylight? I never know!), Friday, February 20! (I should have an estimate by Monday or Tuesday…)

Info to help you…

It’s a Subaru Outback, 2001, standard package, ~70,000 miles, in good to excellent (for its age) condition.

What’s damaged? That I can see: the back end (including glass), back bumper, back lights, roof (back, and both sides), roof rack, passenger door, rear passenger door, rear quarter panel (including the glass is gone), passenger mirror. I know that when the front bumper got replaced a couple of years back, it cost about $800. Here’s some pics…

It seems the state is not going to pay for damages. I am going to let the insurance company deal with it. Luckily I have good insurance (and it isn’t expensive, through AAA), and I will only have to pay the $200 deductible (if the thing isn’t considered a total loss anyhow).

I have a vehicle to drive… dh’s old Toyota pickup. It looks a little like this one, but lower to the ground, rustier and with bondo holding parts of it together, and with a windowless cap on the back… same color though!

I had more to blather about, but as soon as I sat to post, there were lots and lots of interruptions and I’ve forgotten!

It looks so bad. I’m going to guess around $2800. I hope your insurance won’t go up because of this!

I am going to cheat and have my car collector husband look at this. If he wins the yarn he will give it to me!

I’m glad no one was hurt. There looks to be a lot of damage. Sorry about that. I’ll guess it’ll be about $5500 but I suspect the insurance company is going to call it totaled. Sorry about that.

Ok - I’m going to say $3800, and that’s crummy that the state is not going to pay…

Hi there. I suspect your vehicle is totalled, based on what I’ve been hearing for just a door, etc. With that extensive damage, I will give you a guess of $9000. I am just so so glad that no one was in the vehicle at the time! Or near it…

If two guesses are close you said you’ve give to the “over” — don’t you mean the “under?” Well, that’s just me, your Mom who can’t add, subtract or multiply! Plus I have no sense of direction but that has nothing to do with math. Anyway, I think the car should be totalled, but don’t include me in the contest. LOVE YOU LOTS! MOM

Well, as I don’t have a car and never had one and as in the part of the world I live in this car wouldn’t be allowed to be back on the streets (even if it was repaired it would be deemed unsafe :)), I’m going to go over the top with my guess and say that it will cost 9378 USD… if it isn’t declared a total loss.

Oh and I think the owner of the building should pay. There were no signs saying that parking there could be dangerous were there?

    Cheers Eva

Our van was parked in front of the house one evening because the neighbors were having their siding/roof done and that was leaving nails on our driveway. Some guy not paying attention fumbled his water bottle and creamed said van. Little mid-sized sedan forced our Grand Caravan up onto the freakin’ sidewalk, about 18″ sideways and a couple of feet or so forward.

Since it was only a year and a half old, it wasn’t totalled but the damage ran close to $10K. I was thinking that the damage to your vehicle looks a bit mroe extensive than ours though we did have structural alignment issues as well. Originally, I was going to chime in with about $9999 in damages but then I looked up the Kelly Blue Book value on a car of your make/model/mileage: $10,245. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it is written off as totalled.

    Sorry about the ice avalanche!

PS - The repairs on our van took over a month. Hope you have a rental coverage rider on your insurance!

Yikes! I’m glad no one was in the car. I’m afraid that I’m with the other who think the insurance company is going to call this one totaled. Estimate for repair: $4386 (Just pulling a number out of my hat.)

My guess is $9130. I know about ice damage. Someone didn’t clear the ice off their SUV roof and it hit us going 65 MPH. The windshield held but it was pushed way in. We were covered with glass chips. Ice is very dangerous.

That’s what I call a freakish accident. Glad you have recovered from the trauma, somewhat.
Car estimates require an arcane sort of knowledge, and I don’t have any so I’m pulling $4098 out of the air as my guess.
    Hang in there.

Oh gosh, what a mess. I’m sorry to hear about this and hope you get your car back to normal soon and with minimal hassle. (Wait, there are insurance companies and deductibles involved, so the “minimal hassle” may be an unrealistic dream…) I’m guessing the total cost to fix everything will come in at $1950. Good luck!

Looks bad…and with no reference I am guessing your damage is $5355. At a ski resort in Idaho here a guy shut his condo door on the way out and big ice/snow fell on him and he is paralized…so dangerous. Your guardian angel is at work I guess

First of all, I’m glad neither you nor anyone else were near the car when that happened! Ice really can do some spectacular things.

I would guess that they’re going to declare your car a total loss. Having had a Subaru in the past, I know they can be REALLY expensive to repair, so I’m going to guess that the estimate will be in the neighborhood of $7800.

Have you started shopping for a replacement yet? I think I would have.

Good luck and may the repairs be much cheaper than we’re all guessing.

    What a drag!

If it cost $800 to fix a bumper, I’m going to guess they will “total loss” it. (I had a friend who’s airbag went off after the parallel-parked car in front of hers tapped it. The insurance company “total loss”ed it!)

To actually fix it, I’m going with $12,000.

At least $7000. I had one dinky little dent, but it was on the back end and messed up the rear door on my van and that cost over $3000. Way too much for so little damage. Yours, on the other hand, is BIG damage. On second though, $8000. Good luck!

It’s definately totalled. Hubby(Scott)’s car was recently in a fenderbender and it was considered totalled. It was about the same condition as his before the accident. Yours feared worse damage than his, so it has to be totaled.

Tell Amy I really want that yarn. :)

    Lisa!

Brian called to say he wants to guesstimate $8,700.

Aija is visiting, and her estimate is $9,562. She now feels better about the simple timing belt replacement her car is undergoing today.

I keep reading the list of parts over and over. A fender-bender goes for over $2,000 now and includes all sorts of picky little clips and pins and plastic bits… Yours would include a lot of picky parts as well as the big parts… and glass… And therefore my final estimate is higher than I at first thought it’d be, though I’m lowering it because of your comment about your front bumper repair cost - Maine must be different from NY. I’m going with $8,200.

And if your keeping a count of people who say totaled vs. not totaled, we’re all 3 in the totaled camp.

OMG! I didn’t even ask V. for her opinion! I asked whether she’d like to submit a guess, and she said an enthusiastic YES! V’s estimate is $8,888 because she is 8 years old and so is your car.
