snow melt contest winner! (and Creature Feature)
Is Brenda!
I was ready to call it gone yesterday (and blogged about this but that got lost…), the day Brenda guessed, but in truth there was a slight raise of about half an inch over maybe a two foot area where the ice was. Thought I had a pic, but no. Took one today, but forgot to download! ANYhow… there IS still a tad bit of ice there, but it is flat to the ground and plate sized and I only know it was there because I poked it with a stick. So Brenda wins! Wins what? This…

bfl from amy in a colorway called abyss… the coolness of the color and the thought of being in deep blue water was very appealing on Sunday!
I know Brenda is a spinner, and hope she likes this!
So I know that I left at least one of you hanging on that last post… When you give the lupine flower a little squeeze, it looks like this,

slick and dark and pointy
Reminds me of
….OKEEDOKEE, there must be a conspiracy! I think that as soon as I type a certain word, the post-saving mechanism fails and it refuses to post! Lost the rest of this! But my super powers will restore it to you (yeah yeah…)
It reminds me of a certain organ found only in male dogs (ah, save worked… so apparently I cannot type p3n1s). And here’s a hint, don’t google images of this two word item ‘dog p3n1s, because it won’t get you an anatomically correct educational picture… it’ll mostly just get you some disturbing things.
So I should know what this black part is called, but I don’t and I’m too lazy to look it up, so you get pictures,

hiding under that black flower part is the anthers on their filaments and the stigma on its style
You don’t really need to squeeze the flower to get the parts to come out, they’ll do it all on their own, given enough maturity,

The black parts start to look odd and withery as the pods develop,

Creature Feature!

this girl looked a little tipsy from all the nectar
check out the abs on this creature,

a harvestman! One of many that were hanging about on the rugosa roses.
Check out the amazing pictures of these creatures here.
And to conclude your Creature Feature, I give you this,

rather large snapping turtles!
That’s Phillip de Maynadier from Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. He live trapped these two monsters from the pond on his property… and will use them for an educational program for kids (and then will release them back into the pond). I asked him if they were two big bad boys or girls… he said they are difficult to sex, but the larger one weighs 42 pounds and the smaller weighs 30 pounds.
No nightmares now!

The abyss is beautiful! Thanks so much for the contest - it was fun seeing the dirty, melting pile of ice.
Here, I’ll try to say it in the comments: EDIT: I tried to type the “p” word and my comment wasn’t accepted!

Not only that… Brenda’s comment didn’t even come in as spam, though lots and lots of junk does.

Congrats, Brenda! Hmm, I might have to go try typing all sorts of anatomical words in a pseudopost to see what happens. BIG snapping turtles. Oy.

Love the pics! I saw a giant turtle like that trying to cross the highway the other day…
I still wonder if he made it. I would have stopped to help him, but I didn’t want to get killed trying to stop in the traffic.

Hope he’s careful with this turtles. One like them took ahold of one of my aluminum shovels one time and I didn’t think I was going to get it back. I think the black pointy things are stamens. I think. Anyway…gorgeous fibery giveaway!

So we can’t say the P word around here??? How about…..um….PECKER???
I love lupines. Perhaps I will grow some now. Not for the P but just the loveliness. Although, if those spidery things are attracted, I’d rather not!

I don’t remember of you were reading my blog a year ago when I put up a post about a couple big snappers that I caught in the throes of mating.
