winner! and ramblings

So, Part 1 contest winner is Tara! (or is it Tara’s daughter??). Congratulations! I’ll keep you posted about Part 2… I’ll figure out some nice fibery prize as the time draws near.

I heard a rumor this morning from dh about crocus in the back yard, so I went on safari
crocus
sure ’nuff! Not open because it was all of 35F this morning… Look where the crocus grow out front… we won’t be seeing them for a while,

crocusNO
(that’s over a foot of snow under that rhododendron)

Yesterday I noticed some green on the north (south facing) bank, daylilies starting out…
daylily
(not much to see there…)

The south bank? (It faces north and east)

But see on the sidewalk side, some has melted, and what do I see this morning?
goutweed
Goutweed! A nasty invasive thing that I can’t get out of the yard.

So, given that it was a raw, cold, rainy (and snowy too!) day, what did we do for lunch? Go to the dump to look for an Iceland Gull. Our new Associate Info Mgr is an insane obsessed avid birder. Here I thought I was looking for a gull with white wings. Nope, just white wing tips.

jah jah whatevah just keep Mr. Hitchcock away!

Since I have seen one of these once before (which I knew only because a gull expert pointed it out… amongst about 1000 other gulls hanging out on the Fulton River in upstate NY), I was more than ready to not spend a whole lot of time in the cold rain.

This morning, I couldn’t park in my favorite area, so I had to investigate. Big Rigs! I only got around to pictures later in the day…
trucks trucks2
Though the first pic is blurry (taken through the window), can you see that brick building? One of those trucks backed up around that building to the other side from where it is now. Lots of noise and big metal boxes this morning… our intern said they were bringing the lions in. I asked the first person I saw back there this morning… whatchadoin? Getting stuck was his answer. Look at this, it was smooth asphalt yesterday,

ruts ruts2
There were two forklifts stuck in those ruts this morning. That green box is the new generator. I work in the building in the back with the nice turret, on the second floor, the third is still unfinished.

What amazes me is that the truck backed up through here,
truckpsg
the old ambulance entry, I think.

Second spinning class tomorrow! Pics soon…

And, in case you didn’t know…

What those semi drivers are capable of doing with their 44′ rigs amazes me. A couple years ago I drove our Dodge conversion van through lower Manhattan on a weekday. That was enough close space driving to last me forever.

I guess I should stop complaining; our snow is finally gone. Of course it’s been rainy and nasty, but at least its not white! It is only April though, still plenty of time for more.

We ended up doing something again last night (a friend had unexpectedly open spots at her table for a dinner recognizing local people for their work preventing child abuse, and asked us to come) so I have not been able to get the anti-rabbit stuff on, nor have I checked to see if my crocuses have been beheaded yet this morning. I work this morning, but this afternoon, the bunny repellent is definitely getting applied! Hopefully not too late for the white and purple one I showed on my blog yesterday.

Those megasnowpiles on the north-facing side will be a while yet thawing! Maybe you’ll get a big rain like we did this week; it helped a ton, sluicing snow away. And fortunately, not enough to get much flooding.

Wow - just wow. I can’t believe you have evidence of crocus in your yard!! I’ve been looking for my first crocus of the season, but I don’t think there are any planted here. Have been enjoying watching Sir Thomas Turkey put on a display for the ladies, though - looks just like the Thanksgiving turkeys!

And bravo for having a little history/geography in your blog - I’m proud of you!

    :) C.
