Who was suspended from school yet again. Again for 10 days. Again with the suspension on either side of a school vacation.
This time for a smart-ass comment, intended much as a joke, and much as a smart-ass comment, to the teacher, which, if he’d used just about any other word, would’ve resulted in perhaps a detention.
You cannot say the B word at school.
And now he’s in a federal database of disruptive students. I can’t find any information about this thing, and only know that it’s a federal mandate that the states tell their school districts that they must comply or lose federal funding.
I have a query out to the state’s Dept of Education, and plan to follow up with our two senators.
Clearly the kid did a stupid thing, especially for such a bright boy, but also the teachers and administration know that he was looking for a reaction and had no intention of doing anything about a bomb.
What frustrates me is that I am just now hearing about how much trouble this teacher has managing this class, which I imagine can be challenging, and that there are two girls in particular that cause classroom disruptions. There’s a long story here, but these girls are verbally aggressive and know how to work the system. It was a day with these disruptions that kiddo made the stupid comment to his teacher. The teacher he thinks hates him.
This group of kids moves between two teachers. I’ve met with the other teacher, at the recent parent conference, thinking I would meet with them both because that’s what happened the first time, but no, just the one. Apparently I was to make an appointment with the other, who was gone by the time I finished with the first. But how was I supposed to know that? I told her at last week’s emergency meeting that kiddo’s grades in her class reflect in part how he thinks she feels about him. He is a very bright boy who is performing far below what he should in her classes. I know part of that is just his being a boy, and his not wanting to put out the effor, but I also know that he does much better in the other teacher’s classes. The teacher who does not have the classroom management problems. With the same group of kids. So what is different between the two?
So what would you do if it was Friday and you’d been at work too long, and your coworker figured out how to get the first of four EPA grants into the online submission site?
Go out for a drink! At Joyce’s, the bathroom and kitchen of which used to be the yarn shop. It was warm enough (for Maine, I think it was maybe 48 or so by then) that we could sit on the deck.
And here are pics of the shop from when we packed it all up for a forcasted flood one April a few years back.
And when I went into work on Saturday morning to get grant #2 submitted, what did I see?
Which I only noticed because there was a tag stuck on it, from “night eyes”. Apparently capitol security goes around on the off hours. And they found our coffee pot still on.
We hardly ever use it. It was either me or S who left it on, we were the only two who had coffee… I wonder how they knew. I only know that we’re lucky it was only burnt coffee and not a burnt building.
Decided a change of scenery would be a good thing. Kiddo and I are going to visit my mom, over the April vacation, in Florida.
For 10 days (not the 10 suspension days!).
I’m bringing the maplewing shawl (not the shawl, but the yarn and pattern) with me. Since I’m nervous about getting the needles (which I haven’t yet bought) taken, I’ll pack this away and bring a sock on the plane.
Things are going to be a little hectic this week, but I’ll post from Florida.
And I’ll be sure to show you sunshine and water and who knows what all else.
