and the winner is

Well, nobody got it quite right, but there were two guesses that were darn close. KitKatKnit guessed a cremesicle corn snake (which I’d never heard of…but she had the right type of critter!), and Cathy-cate said at her house it would be a snake. So I tossed a coin, well a Connect Four piece to be precise. The winner is Cathy-cate!. Cathy’s livejournal account must’ve been set up to comment on mine, there’s nothing in it! Cathy, email me your address at lisasaint AT gwi DOT net.

I give you Gibbs, a garter snake

Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis, Eastern garter snake

Gibbs is just a temporary resident. DS thinks the snake is a he, I’m guessing a she. Last week DH kicked over a stump that the snake was using as a hibernaculum. Because it was still pretty early, and because it’s interesting to watch the snake, it came to live inside for a while. Sometimes you find these hibernacula, and there are a bunch of snakes…kind of primordial and creepy but interesting.

I have some interview questions to answer, I’ll do that tonight or tomorrow. Thanks everybody for your critter guesses. I’m supposed to be getting ready for work, so if you just posted and I haven’t gotten back to you…I’ll come over and say hi later.

sew what?

Thing 1 wasn’t quite right,

I figured out a couple of things for Thing 2, but it wasn’t quite right either,

But at this point I was willing to cut into ‘real’ fabric (as opposed to circa 1978 fabric from my MIL)

the tabby thing is intended for a tiny carabiner so I can hang the bag from a belt loop

After Thing 1 I ran down to Whippersnappers (you need to scroll to the bottom, they’re in alphabetical order). Lynn, the very nice owner, suggested double pulls versus the one. The ‘real’ fabric is from her…her store is like walking into a paint box!

I’m still not entirely sure (because I wing these things) if the opening is going to be good on Thing 3. Don’t look too closely, the seems don’t line up!

I bought the fabric maybe a month ago, enough to make three different color schemes of these bags, maybe some short needle rolls, maybe some notions pouches. I’m going to see how mine holds up before making more of the small project bags.

And why, you may ask, do I want a small project bag? Well, in part, who wouldn’t? But, also, ::nerves to be saying out loud:: I’m going on a trip! May 16 I leave Portland at 6 am (which means getting out of here by 3:30 or so…), and after flying all over I end up in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where I’ll meet my mom!, and my aunt (her sister) and uncle (the aunt’s husband). We are doing this trip. It is an incredible and wonderful gift from mom, I am so looking forward to the time with her, my aunt and uncle, spending time on a train, seeing all the parks, just the whole thing! Here’s where you all might be able to help me…they all fly out of Albequerque May 25, as do I, but I land in Phoenix and don’t leave there until after lunch on the 26th. Do you know any knitters in Phoenix who would want to get breakfast/coffee/hang around and knit on that morning?

Contest update…if more than one person guesses correctly, I’ll pick a winner at random. If nobody guesses correctly, everybody is in and I’ll draw a random winner.

Eye Candy and mini contest

It is a gray and rainy day, but spring has begun in my yard! See…

these came up over the past weekend

One of the little things I really like about our very old house that I noticed when we first looked to buy it?

British soldier lichens that live just above ceramic tile numbers mounted on a board on the board and batton siding

So, the contest is for this,

Grignasco Karma, color 325

I got it thinking it would be interesting in a black felted bag, but that just doesn’t seem to be happening! Again, the contest is to guess what is living (it really is a living thing) on my kitchen table. Entries by midnight Sunday, April 29. Will send it out on Monday or as soon as I get your address!

coffee info

My swap partner, Caffeinated Knitter just put up a coffee questionaire. What a great idea! Here are my answers

Details about my coffee preferences!

  1. Whole bean or ground? whole bean
  2. Fully-loaded or decaf? mostly fully loaded
  3. Regular or flavored? regular–I really don’t like flavored coffee hey w’apos;re the same!
  4. How do you drink your coffee? usually with cream (not milk!), otherwise black
  5. Favorite coffee ever? Carrabassett Coffee Rooster Roast, and their Sumatra Decaf, and also Backdraft but I buy from them regularly and would like to expand my horizons
  6. Are you fussy about your coffee or will any old bean do? I think I might be fussy, I enjoy the rich and dark stuff, and just tolerate average coffee
  7. Favorite treats to have with your coffee? um, about anything chocolate, especially dark
  8. Anything else about your coffee preferences? did I say rich? though I also like sweet light iced coffee in summer
  9. Yarn/fiber you love? merino, and, well, who doesn’t love cashmere and silk?
  10. Yarn/fiber you hate? I’m not fond of ribbon yarn or polyester novelties
  11. What’s on your needles? a sock, a sweater
  12. Favorite colors? olivy and limy greens, autumny reds and oranges
  13. Allergies? no
  14. Anything you really love, really don’t like, or just need to get off your chest? Chitterlings (hate ‘em), but I wasn’t worried they’d be coming in the mail or anything. I’m having fun with my first swap!

Can you guess what kind of living creature is currently making its (temporary!) home on my kitchen table? I’ll have to think of something in the stash to give away to the correct answer. Guess by Sunday so I can send it out on Monday…I’ll get details up soon.

Coffee Swap Partner

My mom called me, asking ‘do you know what today is? and do you know when your last blog post was?’ !!!!

Knitting news: not much, slow progress on the sweater, but it’s coming along.

Blog news: I have a coffee swap partner! It’s Caffeinated Knitter! I tried to put this button on my sidebar…not sure if the problem is with me or with livejournal.

Not much for you…ds has been taking lots of pics around the house, here’s one
